Yoga is a moment during the week when we can pause and look inward as we stretch, balance, breathe and move. As such it can perhaps feel a little self-indulgent. Focussing on your own health and well-being somehow gets equated with being selfish and that's one reason why it gets pushed down the 'to do' list and becomes low priority.
When my children were young I would struggle to get to a weekly yoga class. Sometimes there were tears or tantrums as I tried to prepare to go out at bathtime. But children can also be wise and insightful (if not tactful).
“Let her go” said one daughter to another on a day when things were definitely not going smoothly,
“She'll be grumpy all week if she doesn't go”
And that's the thing. Yoga helps us feel calmer, more relaxed, more focussed. Both physically and mentally. And when we feel like that we are more effective and efficient in everything else we do whether that's caring for others, working or just dealing with whatever life is throwing at us.
One yoga class won't perform miracles but a regular class and some daily personal practice will gradually bring subtle benefits to your physical well-being, your stress levels, concentration, focus and a sense of balance.
So forget the idea of yoga as a self-indulgence and see it instead as a way of helping those around you. As they say on the F light Safety Announcements - “If travelling with others, attend to your own mask first”
In other words, you're no use to others if you can't breathe!
