It's been a long time since my first ever yoga class, at least 25 years, but I thought I would answer some common questions about what its like coming along to one of my classes.
Before you come - you are welcome to come along to one of my drop in classes without booking; but many people find it useful to give me a call, facebook message, email, text etc. to confirm the time and place of the class and chat about the style of class, level of experience and any concerns.
If you have any health concerns or injuries you should check with the relevant medical practicioner before coming to class.
What to wear - comfortable clothes that you can easily move in, such as T-shirt and leggings are ideal. Its a good idea to have a couple of layers you can take off and put on as the class progresses and you warm up, cool down. Mostly we do yoga in bare feet but some people like to wear socks that have nonslip soles.
What to bring - bring a yoga mat if you have one, a blanket, a bottle of water, and any yoga props you are used to using like blocks and straps. I always have spares you can borrow for the first week or so.
When you arrive - I will ask you to fill in a regisration form and have a chat with you about any needs or concerns you may have.
Class etiquette - Please take off your outdoor shoes at the entrance to the room to keep the floor clean as we will be having bare feet and lying down on the floor during the class.
Please turn off any mobile phones to prevent disturbances.
Arrive in good time as class will start promptly, and stay for the whole class (although I understand things do crop up occasionally)
What we do - The yoga I teach is Hatha yoga, we will start with gentle warming up movements, build up to some asana (postures) which may be standing, seated or lying down, do some breathing practices, and end with a relaxation. Adult classes are usually an hour and a half so we can take a gentle pace. Family yoga, children's classes and teen yoga will be shorter and include age appropriate games, activities, rhymes, stories and music.
During the class - if anything is painful or does not feel right to you please don't do it. I will be able to give you a modified posture or an alternative. Everybody if different and what's easy for one person may be very challenging for another so try not to compare yourself with others in the class, after all they were new to yoga once too.
Well I hope that answers your questions if not please contact me and I'll do my best to help.
